The former Josaphat school complex
This school complex was built at the request of the Municipality of Schaerbeek by the architect Henri Jacobs, who designed not only its floor plans but also all its decorative details. This complex is a perfect model with regard to layout and the organisation of circulation areas.
FACADE
The imposing façade at no. 229, combining blue stone, orange bricks and white Euville stone, is embellished with sgraffiti decorations featuring stylised daisy motifs and is surmounted with the Belgian heraldic lion. The blue stone door surround is topped with the symbol of secularism.
In the same street, no. 243 displays the gymnasium’s impressive white stone façade, its imposing bay supported by cast iron columns.
The technical school is located on the other side of this complex, at no. 30 rue de la Ruche. Its façade includes a large bay surmounted with a sgraffito decoration.
INTERIOR
The interior is organised around an impressive two-storey central courtyard, leading to playgrounds. The sgraffiti decorations, signed by Privat Livemont, brighten up the premises and decorate the main circulation areas in the schools and the façades of this courtyard.
