Building
This house is one of the most famous Art Nouveau creations in the wealthy neighbourhood of the Ixelles Ponds. It was built by Ernest Delune at the request of the artist Victor Marchal.
The highly original façade is one of the most delightful examples of the Art Nouveau heritage in Brussels. Its spectacular stained glass window dominates the whole composition. It depicts clusters of violets in several different colours, the petals of which transform into a myriad of multi-coloured helices.
The front door is no less bold with its off-centre oculus.
In this way, Delune designed a façade full of dissymmetrical openings, topped with a generously-sized bow window. A large artist’s studio can be accessed from this upper floor.
The main façade of this house once looked out onto the rue de la Vallée. Delune enlarged the house by “inverting” it and adding this magnificent façade on the rue du Lac behind a new, wide staircase. By going up to the lounges on the bel étage, or main floor, visitors can admire these flamboyant American stained glass windows at close quarters.
