Personal House of the Architect Édouard Ramaekers

1899 Edouard Ramaekers

Rue Le Corrège 35 | Bruxelles

This residence, designed by architect Edouard Ramaekers for himself, is without a doubt one of the most whimsical creations in north-east Brussels. The building, which blends Neo-Gothic influences and the Art Nouveau style with panache, constitutes the peak of Ramaekers’ career. The residence, filled with abundant decoration, forms a total work of art. The architect lived there until his death in 1941.

The architect showcased unusual shapes; he opened up the façade with large windows and arranged them in an original manner. The stained glass windows and the sgraffiti panels with stylised floral motifs combining Art Nouveau curves and broken lines interact and complement each other. Admire the door knocker in the shape of a hand on the door…

The floors are covered with multi-coloured mosaics and the walls with ceramic tile panelling. All the doors are decorated with stained glass, depicting golden suns and storks preparing to take flight.
