1906 Gustave Strauven

Avenue Louis Bertrand 53-61 | Schaerbeek

Work started on Avenue Louis Bertrand in 1905. Forming a delightful blend of eclecticism and Art Nouveau, its town houses and rental-apartment buildings were intended to provide a suitably impressive approach to Parc Josaphat. In 1906, Gustave Strauven built two groups of buildings opposite each other, at the corner of Rue Josaphat.

This set of three buildings fully showcases the architect's skill at complex façade design involving multiple volumes. The grey stone, yellow and red bricks, and blue and green tones of the floral ceramic tiles combine to produce a warm and attractive aesthetic. The architect signed his design below historiated ceramic panels recalling the Schaerbeek of old and two symbols of this municipality: the donkey and the morello cherry.

The overall blueprint for the three buildings is straightforward: shops on the ground floor, and apartments on the floors above.

However, the interior decor of the present-day restaurant was not part of the original design!
