Gustave Strauven

1878 — 1919
Having worked in Victor Horta’s practice from the age of 18 (on the van Eetvelde town house and the Maison du Peuple), Strauven continued his training in Zurich. He designed his first building, the famous Saint Cyr house, at the age of just 24. This was a true challenge for him, given the narrowness of the plot, which measured just 4,3 metres. Moreover, he was also an inventor who was awarded several patents for a range of different products (a steam heating system, various vehicles, glass bricks, etc.). His death came at an early age soon after sustaining injuries while serving in the Great War, before which his career had been prolific.
