Dricot House

1900 Édouard Pelseneer

rue Malibran 47 | Ixelles

This is the story of a resurrection. In 1900, builder and contractor Pierre Dricot commissioned architect Édouard Pelseneer to design a home for both himself and his business. The resulting façade is as original as it is eye-catching.

A door on the right gave access to the private quarters upstairs, while on the left a tall, wide porte-cochère led through to the rear of the plot, where there was a stable and storage shed.

The enormous sgraffito mural on the upper floors must have made quite an impression when first unveiled! Created by Paul Cauchie, it depicts various aspects of the client's profession. Ladders look as though they are resting against the first-floor oriel and the balcony above, creating a sort of ‘mise en abyme’ of the building's construction.

The façade had been a shadow of its former self following a major renovation in the 1980s, but a restoration, completed in 2017, has seen the return of its original colours and structures.
